Chuck, Project Manager

Chuck knew at an early age that he would be a builder. "I started with blocks and Legos, progressed to 2x4's and plywood, and now work with concrete and steel. I'd much rather build a project than design one, and my involvement with petrochemical and power construction has exposed me to the latest technologies and specialized equipment. For example, we've used some of the largest cranes in the world on our projects."

Being a project manager means managing people too. "I am responsible for the work of many people with different levels of experience, different backgrounds and different attitudes. I step in as needed to make sure our people work well together to keep the project on track. We've successfully completed projects which would typically executed by much larger organizations, but we have a small company atmosphere. Working closely with and leading our field staff has allowed me to make friends and work with people who share my desire to never back down from a challenge."

Cherne project managers perform mind-boggling tasks. They are responsible for safe and profitable completion of construction projects worth millions of dollars and totaling hundreds of thousands of labor hours. Project managers are employed at Cherne project sites nationwide, and must be willing and able to relocate. Their time is spent both in the project office and outdoors on the project site. Weekly work schedules of 60+ hours are common.

Project managers report to a home office based executive and receive support as needed from corporate and field staff. Newer project managers receive mentoring and support from seasoned managers with decades of experience.

A typical day for a project manager includes meetings with staff, clients, subcontractors and others. They regularly inspect the work site to monitor safety and work progress and are actively involved in the scheduling process. Project managers also act as mentors for their staff, assisting them in their professional development and advising them on issues such as interpersonal relations, site safety and productivity.
